Fr. Fernando Gianetti - died Tuesday 19th January

Abp Sean first met Fr Fernando in 2007 whilst visiting Buenas Aires with Matteo Calisi. As well as a Parish Priest he was also serving as the then Cardinal Begoglio, now Pope Francis’, Ecumenical Officer. On subsequent visits Abp. Sean stayed with Fr. Fernando in his parish and there began a friendship.

Fr Fernando was greatly involved in the work of CRECES  (Communion of the Renewal of Evangelicals and Catholics in the Holy Spirit ) in Buenas Aires and he also

became a member of the Community of Jesus there. One of my favourite memories is of sitting on the platform at a CRECES celebration of about 5,000 with a group which included the Cardinal, and Fr. Fernando supervising and passing along the row a communal cup of mate (a traditional South American drink) which was simmering away at the back out of sight!

Fr. Fernando’s heart for unity in the body of Christ was always evident and he was courageous in his outworking of that call which we all have in the Community of Jesus. He visited us here in Woking and one insight he shared that has stayed with us is that in our endeavours to work for unity we must first be secure in our identity in the part of the Body of Christ where God has put us: “ Be secure in who you are. “

Fr. Fernando will be greatly missed but our lives have been enriched by knowing him.
